There are two privacy settings in Pressbooks:
- Book-Level settings, which govern the privacy/visibility of your entire book
- Chapter-Level settings, which governs the privacy/visibility of each individual chapter.
1. Book-Level Privacy Settings
Book-Level privacy settings (found under Settings) determine the privacy of your entire book.
- Private: means that only you (and users you specifically invite to your book) can see your chapters, regardless of what the chapter specific privacy settings are.
- Public: means that everyone can see your book, and can see all chapters that are set to “visibility: public” in the chapter settings. Chapters set to “visibility: private” are only visible to you and any users designated as “Editors.”
In order to set your global book privacy/visibility setting:
- Go to Settings in left menu.
- Click on Privacy.
- Select Public or Private.
- Save changes.
NOTES:
a) If you set your Book/Site global setting to “Public” you may still set individual chapters to “Private”
b) If you set your Book/Site global settings to “Private” then no matter what the chapter-level privacy settings, the book will be inaccessible to everyone except specific users you give access to.
2. Chapter-Specific Privacy Settings
Chapter privacy settings are a “second” layer of settings, and depend on the book-level privacy. You set your chapter-level privacy in the “Publish” box on your chapter administration page or on the checkboxes under Text Organize.
If Global Privacy Setting is set to PUBLIC then:
- “Public” means anyone can see the chapter
- “Password protected” means only those with the password may see the chapter
- “Private” means only users you approve as Administrators or Editors may see the chapter
If Global Privacy Setting is set to PRIVATE then:
- “Public” means only users you approve can see the chapter
- “Password protected” means only those with the password may see the chapter
- “Private” means only users you approve as Administrators or Editors may see the chapter
